The apostle Paul delivers a powerful reminder to the Corinthian church about the true cost of their salvation and the resulting ownership of their lives. When he states that believers were "bought with a price," he is using the language of the ancient slave market. In that culture, a slave could be purchased and set free, a process known as redemption. Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for our freedom by shedding His own blood on the cross. Because of this incredible sacrifice, we no longer belong to ourselves. Our lives, and specifically our physical bodies, are now the property of God. This truth directly challenges the idea that we can do whatever we want with our bodies. Instead, Paul calls Christians to "glorify God" in their bodies. This means our physical actions, habits, and choices should reflect the holiness of God and bring honor to Him. Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth around AD 55. Corinth was a wealthy, bustling port city in ancient Greece, famous for its widespread immorality and the temple of Aphrodite. The culture heavily promoted the idea that physical appetites, including sexual desires, were meant to be indulged without restriction. Many people in the Corinthian church were struggling to break free from these cultural norms. Some even argued that since the body was temporary, what they did with it did not matter spiritually. Paul wrote to correct this dangerous misunderstanding. He reminded them that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and that their physical actions have profound spiritual significance. By using the familiar cultural concept of purchasing a slave's freedom, Paul clearly illustrated that their new life in Christ required a complete break from the immoral practices of their surrounding culture.

Understanding that we are bought with a price completely changes how we view our daily choices. In a modern culture that constantly tells us our bodies belong only to ourselves, this verse offers a radically different perspective: your body belongs to God. This truth applies to every area of our physical lives. It means pursuing sexual purity in a world that normalizes immorality. It also extends to how we care for our physical health, what we consume, and how we use our energy to serve others. When you face temptations to misuse your body, remembering the cross provides the strength to resist. Jesus gave His body so that you could be saved, and in response, you are called to offer your body back to Him. Honoring God physically is not about following strict rules, but about showing deep gratitude to the Savior who purchased your freedom.
