Colossians 2:6 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

Paul is reminding the Colossian believers of the foundational truth of their faith. The way they initially received Christ is the exact same way they are to continue living their daily lives. They received Jesus by grace through faith, not by their own works or efforts. Now, they must "walk in him" with that same reliance on his grace and power. This verse serves as a powerful antidote to legalism and false teachings that were creeping into the church, which suggested that believers needed something more than Jesus to be truly spiritual. Paul emphasizes that Jesus is entirely sufficient. To walk in him means to live in a close, dependent relationship with him, allowing his Spirit to guide and empower every decision and action. It is a call to consistent, daily fellowship with the Lord, rooting one's identity and behavior in the reality of who Jesus is and what he has done. The Christian life is not just about a past decision but a present, ongoing journey of trusting and following the Savior.

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Colossae around AD 60-62 while he was imprisoned in Rome. He had not personally founded this church; it was likely established by Epaphras, a fellow worker. Paul wrote to address a dangerous heresy threatening the young congregation. This false teaching, often called the Colossian heresy, blended elements of Jewish legalism, early Gnosticism, and pagan mysticism. It suggested that faith in Christ was not enough and that believers needed secret knowledge, angelic worship, and strict dietary rules to achieve spiritual maturity. Paul counters this by exalting the supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ. He reminds them that since they have already received the Lord of all creation, they do not need any supplementary spiritual formulas.

It is easy to start our Christian journey relying completely on God's grace, only to later slip into thinking we must earn his approval through our own performance. This verse calls us back to the simplicity of our faith. We must remember that the same grace that saved us is the grace that sustains us. In our daily lives, walking in Christ means making a conscious choice to depend on him rather than our own strength. When we face challenges at work, conflicts in our families, or personal temptations, we are invited to trust Jesus just as we did on the day we first believed. We do not need a complicated spiritual formula to grow. We simply need to stay close to Jesus, spending time in his Word and in prayer, allowing his life to flow through ours.
