Exodus 20:3 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

The first commandment establishes the foundation for the entire relationship between God and His people. When God says to have no other gods before Him, He is demanding exclusive loyalty and worship. The phrase "before me" literally means "in my presence" or "in my face." God is making it clear that He will not share His glory or His people's devotion with any rival deity or idol. This is not a suggestion that other true gods exist, but rather an acknowledgment that humans are prone to elevate created things to the status of a god. The Lord had just delivered the Israelites from Egypt, a nation filled with countless false gods. He proved His supreme power over all of them through the plagues. Now, He calls His people to recognize His unique position as the one true God. This commandment requires us to examine our hearts and ensure that nothing takes priority over our relationship with the Lord. Whether it is wealth, power, relationships, or personal ambition, anything we place above God becomes a false god. True worship means giving God the absolute first place in every area of our lives.

Moses received this commandment directly from God on Mount Sinai shortly after the Israelites were miraculously delivered from slavery in Egypt. The original audience was a group of people who had spent over four hundred years immersed in Egyptian culture, which was deeply polytheistic. The Egyptians worshipped a vast array of gods, each supposedly controlling different aspects of nature and life. The Israelites were about to enter Canaan, another region dominated by the worship of false gods like Baal and Asherah. God gave this command to protect His people from the idolatrous practices of the surrounding nations. By establishing this rule first, God set the terms of His covenant with Israel. They were to be a holy nation, set apart for His purposes, and their exclusive devotion to Yahweh was the primary mark of their unique identity.

While most of us do not bow down to carved statues today, the temptation to have other gods remains just as strong. A god is simply anything that captures our ultimate allegiance, trust, or affection. In modern life, these false gods often take the form of career success, financial security, human approval, or even our own comfort. When we look to these things for our ultimate happiness or security instead of looking to the Lord, we are breaking this commandment. Applying this verse means regularly evaluating our priorities. We must ask ourselves what we spend the most time thinking about, where we invest our resources, and what we rely on when life gets difficult. God desires our whole heart because He knows that only He can truly satisfy our deepest needs. Putting God first brings peace and aligns our lives with His perfect will.
