John 14:16 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

In this beautiful promise, Jesus comforts his disciples who are troubled by the news of his upcoming departure. He assures them they will not be left alone to navigate the Christian life. Jesus says he will ask the Father to send "another Helper." The word "another" here means another of the exact same kind. Just as Jesus walked alongside his disciples, teaching, guiding, and comforting them, the Holy Spirit will do the exact same thing. The Holy Spirit is not a force or an impersonal power, but a divine person who comes to dwell within believers. This Helper is given to be with us forever, marking a permanent relationship rather than a temporary visit. Under the Old Covenant, the Spirit would come upon people for specific tasks and then depart. Now, because of the finished work of Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in the heart of every believer.
