Lamentations 3:22-23 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

Jeremiah finds hope in the middle of absolute devastation by remembering God's unchanging character. The destruction of Jerusalem was catastrophic, leaving the Israelites in despair and questioning if God had abandoned them completely. Yet, right in the center of this dark book of lament, the prophet declares that God's covenant love is the only reason they are not entirely consumed. The book of Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah shortly after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 586 BC. The city and the temple were completely destroyed, and the people were either killed, starved, or taken into exile. Jeremiah, known as the weeping prophet, personally witnessed this horrific judgment, which came as a result of Judah's persistent rebellion and idolatry.
