Matthew 5:6 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

Jesus speaks these words as part of the Beatitudes, describing the inner character of those who belong to His kingdom. To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to have an intense, desperate craving for what is right in the eyes of God. This is not a casual wish to be a better person. It is a deep, driving need, much like a starving person longing for food or a parched traveler desperate for water. Righteousness here involves both a personal right standing with God, which comes through faith, and a desire to see God's justice and goodness lived out in the world. Jesus promises that those who have this intense craving will be satisfied. God does not leave His children empty when they seek Him with all their hearts. He fills them with His Spirit, grants them the righteousness of Christ, and gives them the strength to live holy lives. This satisfaction is both a present reality as we experience fellowship with God and a future hope when Christ returns to make all things completely right. The believer finds true fulfillment not in worldly pursuits, but in seeking the heart of God.

Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount to His disciples and a large crowd gathered on a hillside in Galilee. The original audience lived under Roman occupation and the heavy religious burdens placed on them by the Pharisees and scribes. The religious leaders taught that righteousness was achieved through strict adherence to external laws and traditions. This left many common people feeling spiritually inadequate and exhausted. Jesus completely flipped this understanding. He taught that true righteousness is a matter of the heart, not just outward performance. In the arid climate of the ancient Middle East, the listeners understood exactly what it meant to be physically thirsty and hungry. Water was often scarce, and food was not always guaranteed. We live in a culture that constantly tells us to hunger and thirst for success, wealth, approval, or comfort. Yet, pursuing these things always leaves us feeling empty and wanting more. Jesus invites us to redirect our deepest cravings toward Him and His righteousness. Practically, this means waking up each day and asking God to align our desires with His will. It involves spending time in His Word, not just to check a box, but to genuinely know Him better. When we face decisions at work or in our relationships, hungering for righteousness means choosing integrity over convenience. If you feel spiritually dry or dissatisfied, take a moment to evaluate what you are truly craving. When we bring our spiritual hunger to Jesus, He promises to fill us completely. He is the only source of lasting satisfaction for our souls.
