Philippians 2:5 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

In Philippians 2:5, the Apostle Paul issues a profound challenge to the believers in Philippi: "Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus." This verse serves as the introduction to one of the most beautiful and significant passages in the New Testament, often called the "Christ Hymn." Paul is addressing a problem of disunity and selfishness within the church. His solution is not a list of rules, but a call to imitate the character of Jesus. The word translated as "mind" refers to an underlying attitude or way of thinking that drives our actions. Paul is telling the Philippians that their relationships with one another should be governed by the exact same mindset that Jesus demonstrated. This mindset is characterized by radical humility and self-sacrificing love. Importantly, Paul notes that this mind is already "yours in Christ Jesus." Because believers are united with Christ, they have the capacity, through the Holy Spirit, to think and act like Him. It is both a command to obey and a reality to live out.

The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians while under house arrest in Rome, around AD 60-62. The church in Philippi, located in Macedonia, was the first church Paul established in Europe. While it was a strong and generous congregation that brought Paul much joy, they were experiencing some internal disunity and selfish ambition. Two women in the church, Euodia and Syntyche, were having a public disagreement. Paul wrote this section of the letter to address these relational issues, urging the believers to be unified. To show them what true humility looks like, he points them to the ultimate example: Jesus Christ.

Philippians 2:5 calls us to a radical shift in how we view ourselves and others. In a world that constantly tells us to look out for number one, demand our rights, and climb the ladder of success, Jesus offers a completely different model. Having the mind of Christ means choosing humility over pride and service over self-promotion. It applies to our marriages, where we must put our spouse's needs before our own. It applies to our workplaces, where we can choose to help a coworker succeed rather than competing with them. It applies to our churches, where we are called to serve quietly rather than seeking the spotlight. When we face conflicts or disagreements, we can pause and ask how Jesus would respond. By intentionally adopting His attitude of selfless love, we become living reflections of the gospel to a watching world.
