Revelation 22:17 — Meaning, Context & Commentary

Revelation 22:17 stands as one of the most beautiful and expansive invitations in the entire Bible. Placed at the very end of Scripture, it serves as a final, urgent call to salvation before the book closes. The verse features a dual invitation. First, the Holy Spirit and the Bride, which is the Church, unite their voices to call out to Jesus, asking Him to return quickly. This echoes the deep longing of every believer for the second coming of Christ. Second, the invitation turns outward to the world. Anyone who hears this message is encouraged to join in the call. More importantly, a wide-open offer is extended to anyone who is spiritually thirsty. Jesus invites all who recognize their need for Him to come and receive the water of life. Jesus invites us to bring our unsatisfied desires to Him, promising to quench our spiritual thirst with His living water. We do not need to clean ourselves up or earn our way into His presence because the offer is completely free. Second, this verse calls us to join the Spirit and the Church in inviting others. If we have tasted the water of life, we should naturally want to share it. We are called to be a welcoming voice in a broken world, pointing thirsty people to the only source of true satisfaction.
