What Does the Bible Say About Grace?

Grace is one of the most central concepts in Christian theology — the unmerited, unearned favor of God freely given to sinners through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul summarizes it in Ephesians 2:8–9: 'For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.' Grace is not merely God's kindness; it is the very foundation of salvation, justification, and the Christian life.

Common Questions

What is the difference between grace and mercy?

Mercy is God withholding the punishment we deserve; grace is God giving us the blessing we do not deserve. Both flow from God's love. In salvation, mercy means God does not condemn us for our sins; grace means He adopts us as His children and gives us eternal life through Christ.

Does grace mean we can sin freely?

Paul directly addresses this in Romans 6:1–2: 'Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means!' Grace does not license sin — it transforms the believer. Titus 2:11–12 says the grace of God 'teaches us to say no to ungodliness.' Grace both forgives sin and empowers believers to live differently.

What does 'saved by grace through faith' mean?

Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches that salvation is entirely God's gift — not earned by religious effort or moral achievement. Faith is the instrument through which we receive grace, but even faith itself is a gift from God. This is the Reformation's core teaching: sola gratia (grace alone) and sola fide (faith alone).
