What Does the Bible Say About Healing?

Healing is one of the most prominent themes in the ministry of Jesus, who healed the sick as a sign of the Kingdom of God breaking into the world. The Bible addresses both physical healing and the deeper spiritual healing of the soul, grounding both in God's compassion, sovereignty, and redemptive purposes.

Common Questions

Does the Bible guarantee physical healing if we pray with enough faith?

No. While James 5 calls for prayer for the sick, the Bible also shows godly people who were not healed (2 Corinthians 12:7–9; 2 Timothy 4:20). God heals sovereignly according to His purposes. Isaiah 53:5's 'healing' primarily refers to spiritual restoration, though God does sometimes heal physically.

What is the difference between physical and spiritual healing in the Bible?

Physical healing restores the body; spiritual healing restores the relationship between God and humanity broken by sin. Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24 use healing language to describe Christ's atoning work. Ultimate healing — the resurrection body — awaits believers in the new creation (Revelation 21:4).

Should Christians seek medical treatment or only pray for healing?

Both. Luke, the author of Acts, was a physician (Colossians 4:14). Jesus acknowledged the role of doctors (Mark 2:17). The Bible presents medicine and prayer as complementary, not competing. James 5 calls for prayer alongside practical care, not instead of it.
