What Does the Bible Say About the Sabbath?

The Sabbath (Hebrew: shabbat, שַׁבָּת, meaning 'to cease' or 'to rest') is one of the most significant themes in Scripture, established at creation (Genesis 2:2–3) and codified in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8–11). God rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but to establish a pattern of work and rest for humanity. In the Old Covenant, Sabbath observance was a sign of Israel's covenant relationship with God (Exodus 31:13). In the New Testament, Jesus declared Himself 'Lord of the Sabbath' (Mark 2:28), healed on the Sabbath, and reframed it as a gift rather than a burden. Paul taught that Sabbath observance is no longer binding on Christians as a legal requirement (Colossians 2:16–17, Romans 14:5), while the principle of rest remains a creation ordinance and a foretaste of eternal rest in Christ (Hebrews 4:9–10).

Common Questions

Should Christians keep the Sabbath on Saturday?

Christians disagree. Seventh-Day Adventists and some others observe Saturday as the Sabbath based on the creation pattern and the Fourth Commandment. Most Protestants worship on Sunday ('the Lord's Day') to commemorate Christ's resurrection (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2). Paul taught that no one should judge another regarding Sabbath observance (Colossians 2:16, Romans 14:5), suggesting it is a matter of conscience rather than a binding command for the church.

Is the Sabbath commandment still binding on Christians?

Most Protestant theologians distinguish between the moral, ceremonial, and civil aspects of the Mosaic Law. While the moral principle of rest is rooted in creation and remains wise, the specific legal requirement of Saturday observance belongs to the old covenant that has been fulfilled in Christ (Colossians 2:16–17). Hebrews 4:9–10 points to a deeper 'Sabbath rest', resting from works-based righteousness and trusting in Christ's finished work.

Why do Christians worship on Sunday instead of Saturday?

The early church began gathering on 'the first day of the week' (Sunday) because Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday (Matthew 28:1), appeared to His disciples on Sundays (John 20:19, 26), and the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost on a Sunday. Acts 20:7 records the church breaking bread on the first day. This shift was not a rejection of rest but a celebration of new creation in Christ.
